My friend and I only have a few days in the San Francisco area and we want to see the Pacific Ocean while we are in the San Jose area on one of the days when we will not be in San Francisco itself.

We would like to see a beach that has rocks out in the water like some of the beaches in Oregon, or at least a beach where we can see some mountains "sink" into the coastline like the beach in Santa Monica.

But one of my coworkers said the only beach like that was in Monterrey and the map makes it look like it's hours away by car. Does anyone know of other beaches like that which might be closer?

Santa Cruz is the closest coast. Plan on an hour to get there. To get there, just make your way over to Interstate 880 (aka State Route 17) and head south. The highway ends in the city of Santa Cruz, and you can just follow the signs to the beach or boardwalk.

Once you are in Santa Cruz, you can drive north or south on State Route 1 and have endless opportunities to see the Pacific coast. To the north is Pescadero, Montara, and Half Moon Bay. To the south is Capitola and Monterey.

Santa Cruz, Monterey, or Capitola.

San Jose is about an hour's drive inland and doesn't have any views of the ocean.
