If you like thrillers, you would probably enjoy House by Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker or The Oath by Frank Peretti. They are both pretty scary and intense.
If you like action-packed thrillers, you may also enjoy Vince Flynn's Special Ops series of books, which starts with Term Limits. Another really intense and fast read.
Catherine Coulter wrote a series of mystery stories featuring, in particular, 2 FBI agents. The series started with The Cove, and it's excellent.
Linda Howard and Nora Roberts have each written some enjoyable romantic suspense novels. Phyllis A. Whitney, Victoria Holt and Mary Stewart have each written truly wonderful romantic suspense (generally in the first person).
Mary Higgins Clark's mystery books are really good and fast reads. For straight mystery, you can't go wrong with Agatha Christie (for instance Ten Little Indians which is also known as And Then There Were None).
Enjoy!

How was your vacation 9 years ago?
Go to Amazon.com and search:
"Lost from Atlantis Book 1" - Book 2 is going to be out in the next 6 weeks or so, Book 3 is written and in editing and will be out sometime in the next few months.
"Death by MURDER David Lindsay" - you have to search that way or it won't come up. There's lots of sex in that one.
"Super Spaghetti"
And the best part is, for now, they're all FREE. You can read them with Kindle Unlimited - if you don't have Kindle Unlimited Google how to get a free trial, and all those books are free. They can be read online, with a free Kindle phone app, or on a Kindle.

I just recently finished reading "The Ruins" by Scott Smith. It's a very good thriller about some people who have a nightmarish, horrific time vacationing in Mexico. It's an excellent read and I recommend it. Here's a link with more info on the book: http://www.randomhouse.com/kvpa/ruins/

If you like Stephen King's short stories, I really think you'd enjoy Neil Gaiman. He has a creative and wonderful way with words, and writes well across several genres, including fantasy, mystery, and horror (his story 'Snow, Glass, Apples' is terrifically creepy).
His short stories have been collected in two books, 'Smoke and Mirrors' and the recent 'Fragile Things.' He's written several novels as well; based on your tastes, I would recommend starting with 'Neverwhere'.
Happy reading!

If you like thrillers, try Robin Cook or Dean Koontz.
If you like thrillers with a little smut mixed in, try a Linda Howard.
I've read about every book any of those authors have written, and all their titles are good.
Also, if you want some good shorts, pick up O.Henry's short stories. Good stuff.

i dont know what time period your looking for, but i lean more toward classics. dont get me wrong, some are very boring, although you have some that are intensly captivating, i recomend the count of monte cristo.
and also this isnt a classic but its my personal favorite the nobless oblige. first 2 chapters are boring as hell, but it shocked me at how it took my complete attention afterward. it is set in victorian times.
