A while ago when I forgot my keys I tried breaking into my house and messed up the metal stripping on the door frame. Ever since then the locks haven't worked properly- you can't unlock the doorknob lock.

I'm trying to get the door off so I can replace the doorknob. I've already removed the pins and the crusty paint, but we can't get it open. It isn't a deadbolt that's locked so I don't see why it should be so difficult, but it won't budge.

Any suggestions for getting my door off?

I can't afford to get a professional.

Why not just remove the door knob and lock?

It sounds like the door is still closed? if so with the pins out take a claw hammer and a thin piece of wood. Place the wood against the molding (so the claw hammer does not dent it) and put the hammer so that the claw only catches the part of the hinge that will come off with the door. then use the leverage of the hammer to work the door out of its place. It will definately take a bit of effort and some shimmying around ( people think that just because the pins are out the door will "fall out of the hole.not true) start with the middle hinge and work your way up and down untill he door comes off.

You are going to have to get that lock off first I believe.

Have you tried disassembling the lock from inside the house?

When you get this taken care of, hide a key somewhere. My parents have one inside a storage building in well hidden place. Works out great if you lock yourself out!

stick a pencil in the hole and slide back the bar then open
