I can tell you about my 70 year-old mother. She only had a one room schoolhouse, and that is what they called it. They only taught basic math, such as adding, subtracting, multiplication and division--no algebra or trig like today. The teacher did paddle them with a wooden paddle if they disobeyed, unlike the discipline or lack of discipline we have in our school system today. A lot of reading and writing was required. They focused on writing a lot--penmanship was very important and my mother writes beautifully and she is 70. They only had a maximum of 15 to 20 student and they were different ages, but the teacher taught in groups on each of their levels. A lot of older people were not college-oriented as it is today. A college degree is the equivalent of a high school diploma back then.

One more thing and this is the truth. Their bathroom was a little out house with newspapers instead of toilet paper. True.
