my companies merging with another huge power house company, it got bought out, 6 people were just walked out today from my company, is this effects from the merger, should I start packing??

You usually have a better chance of staying employed when it is considered a merger than with acquisitions, but considering that the other company sounds like the bigger fish then you may want to at least start looking for another job. I'm involved with acquisitions left and right, and we always have a plan before anything is even announced with consideration of what employees we are going to keep and let go, and we probably only keep like 5% of the employees.

With some mergers certain positions are redundant, those that are will most likely shown the door.or a portion of them dependent upon the additional workload. Specialty positions within a product line are usually safe. Bottom line is you do not now until the axe falls, usually no warning to protect from ant sabotage, of files, procedures etc.
