Following San Francisco's lead, Los Angeles County and city officials are urging people, businesses and government to switch off nonessential lights for one hour next month to save energy.

Supposedly turning off all the lights will delay the Earth's doom by limiting the CO2 emitted in the generation of electricity. Breathing also emits CO2. Maybe instead of "Earth Hour" we should try "Earth Minute," where we all save the polar bears by holding our breath?

Beyond the pointless symbolism, the implication is clear. If we want to save the planet, we need to turn out the lights on human civilization and return to the darkness for which liberals seem to long.

For "Earth Hour" I think I'm going to cut every light in the house on and crank up the air condition.

The only thing destroying the environment is blue states.

Liberals do not care about the environment. They are just fond of the power rush they feel from pushing people around and ordering people around.

Their goal is the whole entire globe enslaved.

peace,lol

The reasons *people* engage in such pointless gestures is because they make a point. Holding our collective breath for a minute might even make a bigger point because it takes a little effort to suck it in for that long. Everybody has an opinion about our environment, but I wonder how those people will be remembered that "politicized" this whole issue. Will our future descendants curse those that thought global warming was all a big joke?

Your attitude should shame any conservative, unless they've become so brain dead that they don't understand where the word conservation came from. Go out and hug a tree why doncha?

I already shut off unnecessary lights - my electric bill is $22/month.

I just don't pretend I'm somehow "saving the planet" though.

I drive a Toyota Corolla too - - - - it's got great gasoline mileage, it's reliable, it will hopefully last for 200,000 miles, and it's cheaper than cars that don't have those characteristics.

But again, I don't claim to be a "better steward of the planet" than someone who chooses to drive a Lincoln Navigator.

All I say is, if you blew your wad on the Lincoln, don't complain that you have nothing left for health insurance or retirement!

It wouldn't be such a pointless gesture if everyone were involved. And I'll say it now like I've done a million times before, even if you don't "believe " in global warming, how does it excuse wastefulness? (like wasting electricity or polluting or air?) After all, they are only asking you turn off nonessential lights.

My only question is why people can't do this every day...

Reducing our use of electricity will help us become less dependent of foreign oil. I believe we should support our troops by driving small cars and being reasonable in our use of resources, even including lights. That way we won't be exchanging American blood for Middle Eastern oil.
I do agree that 'Earth Hour' is pointless. We can all live our lives, 24/7, to minimize the negative impact we have on the earth. Cathyl

And now for some more important news...

Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week

Beginning on October 22, student groups across the nation will hold Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week on their campuses. These protest weeks will feature a series of events designed to bring a message to these academic communities that challenges most of what students are taught about the so-called War on Terror both in the classroom and on the quad.

Do these idiots realize it takes More to turn on a light, or to start up a motor???

So what the save they use 2-3 times in power.

This can only happen on the far left coast.

Why don't they just do what their savior al gore does. Just turn on EVERY light in the house.

What a bunch of moon bats.

Its to raise awareness of the damage of the co2 to the environment.

Apparently, the Earth hour did its job because you noticed it but you did the opposite out of spite.

Because they are brainless hearts. Symbolism over substance is their mantra. What they do is basically to make them feel better about themselves but very rarely has any effect on the problem. They tend to feel guilty about all those that have less than them.

I don't know about that. I think being patriotic, and defending America by reducing oil consumption and reducing CO2 is probably a good thing. You can say all the nasty things about America that you want to, but I still feel that it is worth defending, even if it means an hour or two of darkness.

Reducing oil consumption means a few fewer dollars for Saudi Arabia to fund international terrorism with. It means less of a reason for Republicans to send American boys overseas to die. It means a reduction in oil and gas prices.

Reducing CO2 production slows down global warming, reducing flooding in our coastal cities and a reduction in huricane strength.

Granted, one hour won't do much, but even symbolic patriotism is better than none at all.

Why is it that you feel that America is not worth defending?
