I'm extremely nervous about getting started on mine!...I'm going to write about the roller coaster relationship with my mom...which I hope doesn't seem too cliche from most college kids.

When you choose your topic, ask yourself: why does this make me a good candidate for the UC system?

Why does your tenuous relationship with your mum make you a better UC student?

I think your topic is iffy. UC doesn't just want a sob story. They want to know how the sob story makes you great. Going the wrong way with your sob story can backfire: the admissions panel might think you're crazy with Oedipal issues.

I applied 10 years ago, but I remember what I wrote. I talked about my experiences in my MANY extra-curricular activities, how they broadened my outlook on education experiences. I was in band, plays some varsity sports and sat on the student council. I played that up as "leadership experience" (which is a bit bunk since everyone knows that the high school social hierarchy does not permit nerds, dweeb, dorks and geeks to lead anything).

I talked about my partcipation in a UCSB summer program for HS students (UCSB offered me a Regents Scholarship with my acceptance). Specifically, I talked about my performance in those summer courses; I did very well, and showed that I would be capable of excelling at a UC.

I also talked about the influence of travel, how it expanded my outlook on the world. I talked about traveling to Asia, and contrasting that experience with growing up in a white town. Multi-culti points.

Cliche? Yes. Did I get in? BERKELEY, baby!

in the experience that your mom became a useful student, and had a great dating with the college, then it does no longer harm to show on your beginning paragraph that between the justifications you chosen their software to word is via the fact your mom discovered lots there, graduated in XXXX, and spoke fairly of their software, etc. examine which incorporate your mom of direction as properly!
