For example, if someone says blacks are typically two to three reading levels behind their white counterparts, is that racist or misinformed? Or is saying that homeless white guy must be crazy, they all are...is that racist?

ignorance is ignorance. we are afraid of what is different. we also have not taught our kids how to be tolerant. we sure have taught them hate. talking out of both sides of te mouth is ignorance. Generalizing is ignorance, we need to work on that. homeless white person crazy that is ignorant. black people are dumb. that is ignorant.
tolerance shall be the way.

Well.....what do you say if they are very well informed? What if what they say is accurate? Does it make them a racist if they state a racially-based verifiable fact? Of course not, though I'm sure they will be accused of it.

In direct response, I guess it really depends on the context. A lot of people throw out a lot of crap statements they made up in their head or their friend told them or whatever. Not sure that makes them racist, but certainly naive, incredible, and, as you say, misinformed. Some, I'm sure, are also racist. There are others who actually have a foundation to say the things they say, and if someone doesn't like the facts they have presented, they will use the unoriginal and typical "racist" label. You will notice people only seem to care about misinformations when it is negative in nature. There are plenty of positive misinformation circulating out there that no one claims is racist.

Thats such a good question, but i think it all has to do with the context you ask questions or make statements. Saying that blacks are the dumbest race ever to me that makes you a racist. But speaking intelligently backing up your statement with good reason and saying studies show blacks tend to be less intelligent and just being wrong makes you misinformed!

What's the difference between racist and misinformed?

Things are considered racist as soon as someone is offended. Most likely, "blacks are typically two to three reading levels behind their white couterparts" will offend someone. In order to avoid sounding racsit when quoting pertinent statistics, be very specific. For example; "Studies show that blacks are 2.6 grade levels behind whites in reading tests."

Wow. This is a loaded question if I've ever seen one. Please let me preface this by saying there isn't a racist bone in my body.
That said: The statement you quoted is not entirely incorrect but this is NOT to suggest that somehow blacks are not as smart as whites. It actually points to a problem with continuing segregation of the black and lower income families in communities. I live in Los Angeles which is a prefect example of discrimination and shows major discrepancies in the school system. Lower income families often live in areas that do not provide decent schooling for children so they are often left behind in reading, writing and arithmetic.
Now let me follow up by saying that all forms of racism come from those who are misinformed.

I would say that they fit into both categories. To me, racism is ignorance. In answer to your second question, it is racist and ignorant to say that just because someone is homeless means they are crazy.

Honestly, I don't care about the labels, but the people who always point fingers and are never involved to make things better need to give me 50 ft. I hate being around ignorant *** people. Why do we waste our time? Do you seriously think they will change?
