This has baffled me for some time. What is the proper spelling for this color? Is it "g-r-a-y," "g-r-e-y," or both?

Both. I just had this discussion at work today.

Basically it is the same as the difference between t-h-e-a-t-e-r and t-h-e-a-t-r-e - personal preference.

From everyone's favorite site, wikipedia, they say that g-r-e-y is the UK spelling and g-r-a-y is the US version.

Technically, in the US, it's "gray". Grey is the spelling in UK english, and its become acceptable in most circles in US english as well. So both work.

For what it's worth, "Grey" actually makes more sense on a phonetic basis, but since very little in English orthography makes sense phonetically, it really doesn't matter much.

The correct spelling is c-o-l-o-u-r.

(You've got some good answers there - I just thought I'd be a little facetious!)
