A girl I work with got garage sale clothes from her mother-in-law at her baby shower. They weren't washed & still had the little stickers on them. She gave these to her as her gift & that was all. Is this acceptable?

I think it's okay to buy garage sale clothes, but not to give them as a baby shower gift.

This lady is NOT on a tight budget. She has money.

That's what I did for my friend..of course I did take the stickers off, sprayed them down w/febreeze and folded them nicely and put them in a bag...some of the items still had tags but I got onesies for 25 cents and she got a huge bag full of clothes, hats, bibs and shoes. I did buy a few things at the store. As long as the items look good and not really used then you should be fine. I buy things off ebay for b-day or xmas gifts too and they are used but work just as fine. Just depends on the person.

I think that is tacky. My mother-in-law has given me garage sale clothes over the years, however, the tags were never on them and they were not given as baby shower gifts! So, I completely agree with you.

I don't know if money was an issue, but if so, there are plenty of inexpensive gifts that can be given. Heck, someone could go to a dollar store and buy a bunch of baby odds n' ends and make them into a beautiful, inexpensive basket.

Garage sale clothes are ok......but not as a shower gift. Especially from the mother in law. To not even wash them.....that is tacky.

I have nothing against second hand clothes, i've been given a lot of it for my daughter, and when she's done with I'll pass it on if its not too warn. But I would never give it as a shower gift. And in my opinion, unless the person couldnt afford to get anything else, they shouldnt be given as a shower gift. She could have at least washed them and removed the tags.

Probably not the best baby shower gift. I wouldnt do it. I think it would only be okay if someone was on a tight budget but wanted to give a gift anyway. Otherwise its a little tacky.

I think this is just unacceptable. They should at least have been washed, folded or ironed and put in a nice box. She could still have said they were 2nd hand, but packaged nicely would have made all the difference, especially if they were nice baby clothes, like a label name. I agree with you that garage sale cothes are fine, just make sure that they are well washed (I'd wash them at least twice) and dry them in the sun if possible. Make sure that they don't smell like camphour (moth balls) as this is dangerous to babies. You can wash it out, but it takes about 6 washes and lots of time in the sun to get the camphour out of baby clothes.

This is definately not an acceptable gift for anyone to give. Especially from her mother -in - law. That sounds almost like a slap in the face. That sounds like some deep seeded anger towards the idea of her being pregnant or something.

I would judge based on HER circumstances. If she is short on cash and was going for quantity to feel good about the gift she gave, then it's good. If it was a cheap way out, then boo. I've given clothes like that before, but more as a after the fact shower "bring along". Didn't gift wrap, just gave them to her.

I wouldn't say from a mother in law, but if you had a coworker that wanted to give something, but was on a tight budget I would understand. I mean its hard to know if the mother in law was on a tight budget too, but normally grandmas to be still find some money to go baby shopping.

She could of at least removed the tags and washed and folded them nicely then gift wrapped them.

It is a little tacky. When you said that I just imagined this older lady walking in with a hefty bag and chucking it onto the gift table....lol.

Don't get me wrong I love thrift clothes...why pay full price when they grow out of them so quick.
