Sentience. The smallest forms of life have sentience of some sort. Humans have sentience of their own sentience. Rocks and gas have none at all. Persons who are medically "vegetables" are the exception, but only because sentience has been cut off from the life that once contained it, but human life without sentience is of no value to the person who is the vegetable.
