I think guys are safer to do so...If your a female take a cell phone and make sure people know your route. Taking a friend makes the trip a lot easier and more enjoyable not to mention safer!

Probably a four day drive. You will use about $1000 in gas, for average vehicle and three nights in motels. It's pretty safe alone. I have driven long distances alone and felt really safe. Drive only in the daylight for visibility, get an early start each day. Motels are cheaper in smaller cities and towns, lots of nice and clean ones along the major roads. Go to google maps to plot a route and it will show you how many hours it should take, as well as how many miles. If you know what fuel mileage your car gets, you can calculate how much fuel you will need. Dress comfortably so people won't notice you. There are lots of other travelers everywhere you go.

No! Have you seen the movies:

Wrong Turn
Texas Chainsaw
The Hills Have Eyes
Joy Ride

If not, go rent them, watch them, and NO, don't drive cross country alone.

Unless of course you're a psycho, then you should be ok.

I used to drive from Phoenix to Chicago regularly. No quite across the country, but 1800 miles is a long way. I was free to set my schedule, stop to see teh sights,. talk to people from many different places and enjoy this beautiful country.

Should you? It depends on you, but I would encourage you to venture out and see our great land.

Why do you want to? If its to experience the country..then you already know the answer to your question. If it is something that is just necessary for you to do..then obviously stay on interstates, and make sure the vehicle's maintenance is up to date.

Really depends on where you are going. As long as you have a cell phone and have someone who knows your travel plans, you'll be ok. If you have an itinerary where if you don't show up somewhere you can be searched for, then you'll be alright.
