Once you're in the US you do not need to show your passport except when used as a form of identification.

Even if you travel from State to State and you're flying, you will need ID, and the best form is usually a passport. Yes, she can still travel from State to State as long as she uses her passport as ID. It's better than a driver's license.

All she needs is an ID. Your friends passport, even if from another country is fine. If she has a drivers license or another legal form of ID it is OK. You need a passport as of today to go to Canada, Mexico, or anywhere that is not continental US.
Good luck.

She needs her immigration papers or green card, whatever they call it nowadays, to travel in America. If you don't have a copy of these in your possession you can be detained.
