It was an oil tanker that struck a reef in Alaska's Prince William Sound on March 24, 1989, while under the command of Joseph Hazelwood. It spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into the water, creating environmental havoc. I remember hearing speculation that Hazelwood was drunk at the time of the accident.

After the spill, the Valdez was sent to San Diego for repairs (to the tune of US$30 million), then recommissioned the Sea River Mediterranean.

"Exxon Valdez" is an oil tanker which operates out of the Valdez oil terminal in Alaska.

I actually knew an F-15 fighter pilot at Kadena AB, Okinawa named Capt. Valdez. Callsign "Exxon."
