There was a swan on the lake near the Milne's home, which father and son decided was so proud and haughty looking that he should be called after the Grand Pooh-Bah in the Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan. later, the boy..the real Christopher Robin by the way, was given a teddy bear and named it after the swan except that the name became pooh bear instead of pooh bah. In the very first of the stories, Milne mentions the swan,by the way.

Because Winnie the Kodiak just doesn't have that ring to it!

Seriously though, A.A. Milne based the story on his son (Christopher Robin Milne) and his son's bear, named Winnie after a bear at the zoo named Winnipeg, and Pooh after a swan they encountered on a vacation.
