Be very careful what brand you use. I painted my entire house while pregnant but used a high-end paint specifically to reduce fumes. I never smelled any fumes at all. Use great ventilation/fans etc., and use high-end paint if you can afford it. Avoid Benjamin Moore because they just got in trouble for using certain chemicals that are not safe. Keep the baby away from where you are painting for a few hours till it dries.

My husband and I are in the same situation. We finally finished our 2nd story addition which was supposed to be done before our second son was born (now 3 1/2 months) and now we're up to painting. What we do is have my mom or mother-in-law either watch the baby downstairs or take him outside while we paint upstairs. That way he's away from the fumes. And since the weather's been warm, we were able to keep the windows open upstairs for ventilation. By the time we bring him upstairs to go to bed, the smell has gone, although there was one night we kept him in the playpen downstairs while I slept on the couch because it was still a little smelly. I would recommend having the baby out of the house for the day and paint while the weather's still warm so you can keep the windows open. Also, I was told to get either a semi-gloss or satin paint which is easy to clean off messy fingerprints.

When I painted I got a babysitter and did it on a warm day with the windows open. I think its safe but would have the baby in a room away from where you are painting. I would not do it if she has any breathing issues.

If you used latex paint (water-based), it won't stink as bad as oil based. Plus, it's easier to clean up. Definitely ventilate and if you can, I would recommend semi-gloss paint because you want it to be washable for little dirty fingers.

Just keep everything well-ventilated. It should be fine. Keep the door to her room closed as much as possible and keep a fan both in the hall and her room.
