You can catch toxoplasmosis from kitty litter. Also beaware if you garden cats use the toilet outside sometimes too. Make sure you cook your pork products well too. This disease will affect your baby with severe birth defects. I had a scare when I was pregnant and because I don't have cats my doctor informed me there are other ways of getting this. Be careful use gloves if you have to change the cat's litter box.

I have done some reading on this issue, because I have a cat and have to change the litter. I found out that it is only in the feces. It is less common for indoor cats to have it. I have also read you can get it from gardening with no gloves on, because stray cats will use the garden as a litter box.

When I change the litter box I wear gloves and a mask (I look like I'm getting ready for surgery.) I wash my hands like crazy when I'm done. I also bought a good litter so I don't have to change it as often.

When pregnant you should not change cat litter because you could develop toxoplasmosis which could cause birth defects or misscariage. If you absolutely have no one else to change it for you then you can wear disposable rubber gloves and wash yourself very well when you are done. It is definitely best to try and get someone else to take over that duty during preganncy though. Good luck!
