Pieces of eight refers to a gold Spanish coin that was scored into eight sections. A person could bend and break the coin into "pieces of eight" to pay debts amounting to less than the full value of the coin. 25% of the coin was two pieces, or two bits, hence the "two bits" nickname for a US quarter.
