My neighbor put 3 rows of 18ply twine (1/16 diameter) around his trees. They are at 1 foot, 4 foot and 5 1/2 foot and are in the woods to keep the deer away. My concern is that a person running through the area or a snowmobiler or skier, could seriously injure themselves. Am I worrying for nothing?

At a high velocity, one could actually cut themselves severely. Tell your neighbor to tie some brightly colored strips of vinyl every 5 - 10 inches.

If the tallest strand is 5-1/2 feet, it can easily be cleared by a deer...so it's not going to be very effective as a deer deterrent. I suspect it was meant as more of a deterrent to the 2-legged interlopers...

If someone seeks and gains permission to use his property for recreational purposes, I'm sure he'll make a point of warning them accordingly. The only ones likely to get injured are the ones who are trespassing without permission. At the end of the day, it's his property to do with as he pleases unless there's an ordinance prohibiting it.

Sure they could hurt someone - they should have cloth flags tied to them as markers, just as bare wire or barbed wire should. In fact, it would be appropriate to put No Trespassing signs on the top strand of the three in each place a snowmobiler might go through. Yellow Caution tape would be better and safer, but that would be Ugly, wouldn't it? Of course, are the snowmobiliers and skiers supposed to be there?

it could easily decapitate someone on a snomobile or severly injure someone running.
