I can't really say that I've had a "saddest moment" yet. At least nothing that compares to what you've been through. I've had a "scariest" moment, but praise God, it turned out alright. Therefore, it's not at all the same thing.
I'm truly sorry for your loss (and everyone else that answered this question the same way.) I pray that time will lessen your pain.

When my grandmother died... and the realisation hit whilst I was stood at the entrance to the church stood with my grandfather... who was fairly senile at that stage and didn't really understand what was going on.
then my mum and sister both walked up behind the coffin and I think my grandad finally realised.
that was sad... very sad...
what was then worse... was then a year or so later when my grandfather died in a nursing home from neglect...
the coroner condemned the nursing home and how he could have actually died from amongst other things... bed sores...
to see someone deteriorate so quickly and terribly... is one of the saddest things to see.

The saddest moment of my life was when I set off to come here in USA, leaving all of my family members (except my parents & brother) in my country Bangladesh. It was the most most most most saddest moment of my life because I leave them there for forever. I can never see them unless I get my Green Card. That day I was sooooo crying then ever. I never cried so much in my life. I didn't only cried, EVERYBODY that was in there was crying. SO SAD. I still miss them.

Holding my grandfathers hand while he died. It was a long and slow death and it was almost more than I could take. He was very dear to me.
Another was holding my big mutt of 13 years as he was put to sleep. I sobbed so hard I had to ask someone else to drive me from the vet's office. Terrible.

My heart goes out to you. I am very sorry for your loss.
My saddest moment would not be as traumatic as yours but it was still painful. It was the day I found my husband in bed with another woman. I knew my marriage was over and that was painful since I had so much faith invested in it.

My great grandpa and great aunt dying within 2 days of eachother, watching my great grandma die 4 years ago, and watching my best friend die after a bridge collapse back in August. There was nothing I could do for her. She was pinned in the car that we were in and rescuers couldn't pry her out of it. I held her hand as she was dying. She said she loved me and wanted me to tell her family she loved them. She died in my arms.

Seeing my 3 month old sons coffin being carried into the crematorium. It looked SO tiny! It was so traumatic I remember very little about the rest of the day!
