Personally, I would try to read some classics. Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen was the book that originally got me into reading. It was excellent. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery; Little Women by Louisa May Alcott; Heidi by Johanna Spyri; A Little Princess or The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett; Black Beauty by Anna Sewell; The Master of Ballantrae by Robert Louis Stevenson and The Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis are all great books that I first enjoyed as a child and still enjoy. You may also enjoy Frank Peretti's series The Cooper Kids Adventure series which starts with The Door in the Dragon's Throat.

I don't know that book, but this link should be a great help:
http://www.awardannals.com/wiki/Honor_roll:Genres
Books ranked by number of awards won. It's slanted toward newer books, of course, but you're not likely to find any losers at the top of these lists. Synopsis given with each book.
