I'm in the last year of high school, and I have always been pushed around by certain kinds of people. 2 weeks ago me and my friends were walking through the hallway when a gang of 5 kids approached us and pushed me, so I retaliated by pushing them back an throwing a punch, which triggered the gang to involve my friend into a fight. The fight attracted a crowd quite quickly and was discontinued when we were dragged off and reported. The gang who started the whole thing have given us trouble before (knocking drinks on the floor, pushing people into us etc..) Worse yet, the gang reported that they had never done any thing to us before and the whole thing was 'accidental', and that it was me who bullied them.

For standing up for ourselves, me and my friend were in just as much trouble as them, and I have had teachers appearing out of nowhere telling me to not do it again or I'll be expelled. The thing is, I have tried reporting such things before and it only resulted in more trouble from guys pushing us around. Do you think the school has punished us incorrectly, and is it better to stand up for yourself than to tell on someone?

good for you for standing up for yourself!

What you need is someone who can back you up as a witness to these situations that occur. I would report things immediatly to the principle and guidance counsler!

if they do not help you (which) they are supposed to then you need to contact the supernintendent of your school.

I dont think that anyone should back down from a bully but two wrongs dont make a right. You need to document who you talked to and when you reported problems in the past. Does your school have a resource officer from the local police department there? They are always a good source for help. If not, talk to a trusted teacher or your guidance counselor and ask for their advice. Your parents need to be aware of what is going on and meet with the principal before things escalate and get out of hand. If you are not the kind of student that gets into trouble all the time, you will most likely have the most believeable account of what happened. You need to just have it on record that you are being bullied and then it's up to the school to do something to stop it. Report every incident and believe me something will be done. Schools are always afraid of getting sued.

It seems your school system is very unfair. From your story, you already asked the school to do something about the kids and they didn't. If the school refused to help you, what choice did you really have?

Were there any other people who witnessed these kids bully you before? Get them to anonymously report them. Did these kids bully anyone else. Get them to report too. Soon the school will see the truth.

Next time, don't retaliate with physical force. If they throw the first punch, you can claim self-defense. In this case, you can't since you did throw the first punch.

Hopefully, if you can get a witness(es), the school will understand your situation and soften the punishment.
