My friend has recently had some problems with the police and they have carried over into his home life. He has discussed with me the possibility of running away and we have talked over the likelyhood of becoming successful in doing so. The odds aren't great but nothing's impossible with this kid. The only thing that we've come up with that would get him caught would be if running away in itself was illegal. I realize different states have different laws on the subject but I don't know them. So all I'm asking is if it is illegal to run away from home when you are 17 years of age. Please and thank you. Time is a virtue.

It is illegal. If the parents decide to call the police on him for being a runaway minor, when they catch him, he will be arrested and taken to jail. He will be held there until his parents are contacted to make arrangements.

My little 2 cents is to just wait. When you are 18, you dont need to run away, you can just move out as a legal adult. good luck and the times are always getting better trust me

I am not sure whether it is illegal to run away at 17 in S.C.....but is running away the only solution that your friend can come up with? When you run away from problems...they have away of catching up with you...If he has done something illegal he will be caught...only a matter of time. How about trying to convince him to face his problems and to make a conscience choice of changing his behavior so as to not make bad decisions that will lead him into trouble. Just a thought......

If you have to ask complete strangers about running away I think your already behind the 8 ball. Once you leave what do you do for money, food, shelter etc. I know of no state where it is against the law at 17-but may i suggest you join the navy or air force or coast guard...His way you have a job and food and shelter and some opportunity

Even if it were legal--and I'm not saying it isn't--I wouldn't recommend doing so.

At the age of 17 the only truly insurmountable problems are terminal illness and drug/alcohol addiction. If your friend has only some police problems, then stay at home and get whatever help it takes to get back on track to a normal life. Upon turning 18, his previous criminal records are sealed so that he has a "clean slate" to start his adult life.

I would advise your friend not to let that opportunity pass him by.

Taking a wiser, more mature course now will determine what kind of life he has in the future.

Are you sure this is going to help him? Running away from problems never solves anything. #

No - he is under the age of majority (usually 18).

Make him realize he may have the same old problems in another place, legal or not.
