Choose something interesting to you. Did they give you a list to choose from? This is supposed to be your assignment, no? For instance, if you were a teacher, you wouldn't just be a teacher. You could be a teacher who's in the middle of a divorce who's husband left her for the babysitter who dropped out of high school and is just the same age as the other girl in your scene (and the students she has to teach every day) Maybe she never wanted to be a teacher, se wanted to be a professional ice skater but was injured or she got a real job to support her husband while he went to school... you can make up ANYTHING! You could be someone famous who's being blackmailed. Just be creative!!!

Don't make this harder than it is.

You have certain stereotypes about these professions, and by only thinking of them in one dimension, you miss the character. "He's a doctor, so he's .... " "She's a lawyer, so she's....."

Pick the profession. Recognize the stereotype, and turn it on its head. You might have a veterinarian that secretly hates animals, but became a veterinarian because that's what his dad wanted, or an airline pilot that's afraid of driving a car. Or a teacher who is actually illiterate, which is why they find teaching so important that they devote their lives to it, so they can prevent others from suffering what they have to go through. Even a bartender could be interesting, he could be an alcoholic that found he can only resist drinking if he sees what it does to others on a regular basis.

The point of the exercise is developing the character. You have to add the unexpected dimensions, the things about the individual that don't fit the stereotype.

Be the cab driver. The character analysis is easy, driver is doing that while waiting for a real job.
