It doesn't work as a deterrent, many innocent people are killed every year for lack of a fair trial...
It makes up for a violent and injust society...
What's the point of killing someone if they're being given life already? They don't constitute a danger for society anymore...
Death penalty is a proof of the failure of the Judicial System.

No and no it doesn't work as a deterrent. The only problem with the death penalty is to make sure that the person was guilty. I think that if there was a fool proof way to do this then 99%+ would support the death penalty

I'm in England and we do not have the death penalty. If it worked as a deterrent why are so many people serving life and triple life sentences in the U.S.? Obviously it does not act as a deterrent.
It may prevent people from re-offending but does not act as a deterrent.
I believe the crime rate is higher in the U.S. than here so the death penalty obviously does not ensure the crime rate is reduced.

I agree with Shannon.. and BulletBob...the death penalty only works as a deterrent - if it is enforced.
I live in California and I sat on a jury for a murder trial for over 6 months. We convicted the guy....then we had to decide between Life or Death....some of the questions we addressed were:
when on death row...does the inmate get use of computer, tvs and radios in cell, what types of ammenities does he get.
we were assured by the DA that he would get none of those things! LIAR...we gave him the death penaly and NOW i see that he has access to the computer, he has web pages asking for help, he has full privledges...he has it VERY good....
WE as tax payers give him a place to live (rent free), 3 meals a day, he gets money, he can go to the library, use the computers, has a tv etc in his cell....he lives nicer than alot of people...except that he is locked up! DEath Penalty? HA...when was the last time California put anyone to death!
We (the jury) are apalled at our decision...had we been told the truth...he would had been given life without parole...cause that is really what he is serving in San Quentin.
"The Only way Death Sentence will work is if it is enforced"...if it is not going to be enforced....get rid of it.
thanks âº

How many repeat offenders do you have after the death penalty?
Do you honestly think NOT having the death penalty is any greater of a deterrent? A sane society eliminates its maniacal murderers.

No it dosn't work. In my opion its not that much of a deterrent.
You have the left wing that want to reform everyone give them health care, $1.000,000 and a new Cadillac and buy them all beach house in Maimi, and New Orleans. If things where the way they where in some of the Arab countries we would not have the problems we do. Caught stealing you lose a hand, you kill someone you die with in a couple of hours of being found guilty. Not this 25 years on death row. This is about the only good thing about Muslim religion. You would have the gang problems. Teach respect for life and you will receive respect.

It doesn't work as a deterrent, just look at the people who commit crimes to warrant it. Every either developed country banned the death penalty years ago.
Better to let them rot in prison than death, which is the easy way out.

I used to be for it but gradually over time I began to question it. I just think that no one has the right to take someone else's life no matter how horrible the crime or evil the person. Killing should only be in self defense or is the perpetrator is about to kill someone you shoot him. Also poor people (black, white or of any race), people of color, and the mentally disabled are at a disadvantage when facing the death penalty because inadequate representation. Another reason why I think it's wrong it's because there is always the possibility of convicting and executing an innocent person. There is no excuse for even one mistake.

Actually it has been proved not to be a deterrent at all
Should it be banned? No ! some people just deserve to be killed. Ex. Murderers (eye for an eye), rapists, etc
I agree with bulletbob36
the average person on death row spends 19 years there before being put to death and costs Tax payers $36,000.00 a year per death row inmate, multiply that by 19 years!!!!

this cannot be judged with emotion. emotion belongs in the bedroom leave it there! to answer this properly would mean a lot of typing i can't be bothered to do, and i doubt anyone could be bothered to read it. so here is a condensed version if 1% of all those executed were later proved innocent this would be a tragedy however compare it with 1% of guilty released who re-offend perhaps repeatedly before being caught, and lets not forget the 99% (in this case) that will never get that chance. it all boils down to economics and logic. where is the logic in spending a fortune building staffing and running a prison to contain people who will only leave in a body bag (except in myra hindley's case according to news reports where trips to theme parks and jumping the que for operations were included) it should be used without malice, a painless injection for instance. as should be obvious to all we simply cannot afford it!
