It's legal in most of the U.S. It's legal in most of Europe but not in the U.K. as far as I am aware. It's okay for the U.K. cops to use it on us though. After being involved in an incident that so closely ended in serious violence, the kind of violence in which either he or I would not have got off the floor, I now carry pepper spray. I don't go out without it. In this country you are not allowed to defend yourself or your home or you get nicked. Yet when the police do catch an offender for violence they just issue a "Caution" a let off bascially. They are not really there to protect the public, just collect tax money for the government in the form of issuing motoring fines. You have to look after yourself any way you can because they are not really there to protect you.

The problem is that everyone would use it. If you don't commit crime, you won't get sprayed, it's simple. If you fight in the street, regardless of who started it, if all else fails, you will get sprayed. Police carry it because they are more prone to becoming involved in violent and sometimes deadly situations. It is the governments fault, not the Police as to why you feel you cannot defend yourself in the street, or your own home. Government make the rules not the Police.

As far as you carrying for your own protection.... It will end with you being arrested for possession of a firearm. Pepper spray and CS spray and anything that actually releases any noxious substance is classed as a section 5 firearm.

Everyone seems to think that the Police JUST collect revenue all day for the Government. Wrong. They are dealing with people who can't sort out their own problems, like....

"My brother keeps sending me freatening texs. I want im dun fore it"

"My sister az not given me my drum n' bass cd's bak wot i lent er a munf ago. I want er dun fore feft"

"My next dore neybour keeps looking at me. I want er dun fore arrasment"

If people stopped calling the Police for petty things, maybe they would have the time to sort out real crime.

No, it would be very bad idea. A law abiding person may want to carry one for "self defence" but if carrying these is made legal then you can guarantee that a bad person will also carry one. Bad people won't warn you that they're going to use a pepper spray on you, and you cannot carry it in your hand to spray at someone who "looks at you". A mugger would pounce and use his spray on you instantly and you'd be disabled before you realised what was happening and got yours out of your handbag (or pocket). It is the same reasoning that prohibits carrying knives in "self defence" - too many were bing used on innocent victims.

It will come to pass that if the authorities do not get their act together people will just take the law into their own hands. God help the law abiding citizen then. Just for the record I do not want I gun now or ever, but I think the Blairina government were wrong and unforgivably stupid to enact a law as a knee jerk reaction because the gun licencing system failed at Dunblane. They in fact penalises the most law abiding people in the country who were very strict in the upkeep of safety standards.

I sympathise with you, but in carrying this thing around you are risking arrest and a criminal record. Just be aware of that.
You might be interested in this link. Perhaps a move forward would be to imitate Finland and license certain people to carry it. http://www.code3tactical.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=180

From the rise in violent crime, you folks over there need to allow the law abiding to have guns, lots of guns and training and free fire zones on criminals.
