My grandfather died the day after his birthday, my father died three days after his birthday. After talking to some people I found that people dying on or close to their birthdays isn't so unusual. Why do you think this happens?

Sorry to hear about your losses.I have been there and know how it is.
My sister died on Elvis's birthday and my step-dad died on my other sisters birthday. My aunt died on my son's birthday and my dog died on Christmas.
I now hate all holiday's somewhat.
I really don't know why something bad happens on a day that is suppose to be good.I guess we have to try to make everyday as special as we can.

It's just a coincidence. I know it seems like there is a connection, but there isn't. This is an example of the "correlation implies causation" fallacy. There is no real evidence to suggest that people are more likely to die on their birthdays than any other day.

My great grandma died at the age of 97 just days after she had turned 97.

And my maternal grandmother died just weeks before her birthday.

I don't know why this occurs but you are right it is not that unusual.
