They are living near my daugher's window leaving droppings which is super unsafe for humans. How can we get them to go elsewhere, but not kill or hurt them?

Seriously, I soo appreciate that you want to do this the HUMANE way! Perhaps your local Animal Control could give you some tips... OR try this:
There is something called "Pidgeon Control Spikes" that business owners use to HUMANELY deter pidgeons...

get a hose end sprayer and fill with ammonia. spray the area daily, shortly befor the birds come to roost or at intervals during the day when the pidgeons are most active around your house. the smell will drive them away with out harming them.

Get a couple of fake owls at your lawn and garden center and mount them where the pigeons are hanging out. They won't hang around a predator.

place a glue like solvent where they land and once a single bird touches the glue like solvent he will have difficulty in leaving ( will not die there just difficult to leave) the other birds will avoid the are also and you will be pigeon free

spray wd-40 on the window sill,they will not come back...
