This happened to me, and I know it's not good to get a epidural after already reaching 10cm, but can't find anywhere that says why.
The doctor didn't check me, me and baby are healthly, she's 13months now. But they did have to use the vaccum to get her out, could it have been because of the late epidural, and maybe I was unable to push??? I don;t know the doctor didn't really communicate what was going on that well.......anyways my daugther did have jaudice quite bad because of the vaccum and I tore badly.....

So what happened? And why other the other problems associated with getting a epidural past 10cm?

Thats the problem, doctor didn't check me and after it was all said and done she looked and I was at full dilation.

And I know the vaccum was the cause of BAD jaudice not because of the epidural, just wondering if because of the epidural they HAD to use the vaccum cause I could not push well, on person confirmed that. Are there other risks?

You pretty much answered your own question. Getting the epi that late caused you to not be able to push efficiently. Other then that there are no other dangers.

The reason they don't like to do an epidural that late is basiclly because they like the epidural to wear off a little before you have to push. If you can't feel what's going on down there at all, then you won't be able to push, or at least push right. That's probably why they needed to use the vaccum.

There's really no other risks that are any different from getting it earlier, so it's not the end of the world. :) Glad your daughter is healthy.

it may not take before you deliver, so you will be medicated unnecessarily. Its also hard to push when your epidural is at full strength, many Dr's will decrease the drug when you are near delivery so you have more muscle control.

My son was delivered using forceps, so I know how you feel about the difficult delivery. Be glad you had the epi, it can be very painful to have an assisted delivery without one.

An epidural has not been shown to have any ill effects on a baby, no matter when it was administered. Also, the jaundice is very natural, and not caused by the epi or the vacuum. I am sorry you tore, I'm surprised they did not do an episiotomy instead of risking a tear with the vacuum.

I think the reason why you can't find anything that says why is because it isn't really true. An epidural isn't a one time shot of medicine, it is a continuous drip. The effect during delivery will be the same whether you were given it at 4 cm or 10 cm. Many women report not feeling the urge to push because of the epidural regardless of when it was started.

I don't know that there are necessarily dangers....and in fact at my labor class she said your are never too far along to get an epidural. I think though that they figure its almost over and you've made it this far without it, why bother? Usually by the time the anestheiologist gets there, gets you hooked up and the epidural is starting to work, it's 30 mins average. By then half the pushing is usually over anyway.
In your case, the vacuum could've been necessary for any number of reasons...big baby, ineffective pushing, etc. And the jaudice has nothing to do with an epidural. Also same with tearing....sounds like the baby was bigger than you're body was ready for, but it's quite natural with delivery to tear.

Usually if you do not take a epidural earlier on, once you get to a certain point they wont give you one. It can be harmful to the baby.
