Home field for all the potential play-in games was done by coin toss. I don't know if there was an actual coin that got tossed, or some sort of computer program, but it was random, with each team having an equal chance.

its a coin toss. A few weeks ago MLB had a coin flip with all teams that could end up in a tie: Mets-Phils, Cubs, Brewers, ect ect. Colorado won the flips vs SD so they get the home game.

Because the Rockies won the season series 10-8, including the sweep last week in San Diego. Either team won the NL West, but tied at 89-73, the best records of any of the non-division winners. That's why theres a playoff!

Coin flip conducted by the commissioner's office, a few weeks ago. Colorado happened to win the flip against the Padres for the wildcard. And that's all there is to it.
