Home field for all the potential play-in games was done by coin toss. I don't know if there was an actual coin that got tossed, or some sort of computer program, but it was random, with each team having an equal chance.

its a coin toss. A few weeks ago MLB had a coin flip with all teams that could end up in a tie: Mets-Phils, Cubs, Brewers, ect ect. Colorado won the flips vs SD so they get the home game.

Because they won the coin toss that was held last week to determine who would have home field advantage in the event of a tie

Because the Rockies won the season series 10-8, including the sweep last week in San Diego. Either team won the NL West, but tied at 89-73, the best records of any of the non-division winners. That's why theres a playoff!

Coin flip conducted by the commissioner's office, a few weeks ago. Colorado happened to win the flip against the Padres for the wildcard. And that's all there is to it.
