There's no general rule. Some new businesses make money almost right from the start, others never do.

I would take a three pronged approach.
1. Marketing- send out mailers within a 1 mile radius of your shop to homes letting people know who you are and what you offer.
2. Referrals- Make sure that everytime you cut someone's hair that you ask them for 2-3 referrals! EVERYTIME!
3. Give GREAT service to your existing customer base.

no one knows the answer to this. most new businesses go out of business within a few years. best way to get new customers is do a very good job with the ones you have and ask those people to refer new customers to you, maybe give them a 20% discount on their next appointment for every new customer they refer to you. if they like you they will help you succeed.
