I'm from around Chicago, and I just recently temporarily moved to Rhode Island to study photography, and have been making my way around the northeast.
Is it just me, or do northeasterns seem to some, a tad hostile? Maybe it's the gutteral accent? I'm not sure, but around some, I get a little jittery.
Maybe "intimidating" is the correct word.

You're not alone. Your Midwestern charm may be a bit out-of-place in the abrupt, say-whatever-you-like attitude found in many NE cities. But don't take it personally. While there, you should experiment and develop your own 'tude. Heck, it might even be fun!

My sister moved from Buffalo to Kansas City, and every once in a while someone would say she was nice for an Easterner.

The pace is a little faster in the Northeast, and that takes a little getting used to. She used to hate it when people would chat in the checkout line of the market. But people are people.
