Open's on 4 closes at 1.
1. Intake
2. Compression
3. Power
4. Exhaust
** I'm not sure how what I said is any different from JJ's answer. After 4 you go back to 1. Therefore its closed from 1-3. Please enlighten me?**

Exhaust valves start to open when your piston travel about 75% on the down stroke of ignition cycle, and begin to close in about 75% of the up stroke of the Exhaust cycle. (this apply to 4 stroke cycle engine)

The next up stroke after the power stroke it opens. At the completion of that stroke it closes and the intake valve opens.

Actually, unlike Josh said, the exhaust valve opens on exhaust and remains shut thru the other 3 cycles,
