“The other day when I got home from work I heard a knock at our front door. It was a salesperson selling vacuum cleaners.

He had a vacuum with him that he claimed was the latest in vacuum cleaning technology. He asked me to come into the living room and then he guy dumped a huge pile of dirt on my white carpet! I was about to tell him to get lost when he vacuumed it all up and sure enough it was completely gone. I couldn’t believe it, the carpet looked brand new!

Then he said “Anyone who wants a comfortable, clean home needs this amazing vacuum cleaner. You certainly look like someone who likes having a really clean home. So, you definitely need this vacuum cleaner!”
I told the salesperson he made a convincing argument but that I needed some time to think about it. So he agreed to come back in a few hours for my answer.

Not valid “Anyone who wants a comfortable, clean home needs this amazing vacuum cleaner." implies that there is no alternative to have a clean home. "You certainly look like someone who likes having a really clean home." is an opinion that is based on perception and not validate-able proof. "you definitely need this vacuum cleaner!” may be the only valid argument.

If you already have a nice vacuum you're probably getting it as clean as he did. There are no MAGIC vacuums. There are however, TRICKS OF THE TRADE, to make you think his machine is really exceptional. And even if you are really impressed, I'm sure you can probably go online to Ebay and find brand new ones being sold for less than 1/2 the price. I found this out when a Kirby vacuum salesman came by my house. Don't be fooled!

It is probably a special kind of dirt, plus the fact that it had not been pushed in by foot traffic makes a difference. By from a brand name store. Go to Consumer Reports and buy a one month subscription, on-line, and find ones that are tested under real conditions.

Go to the dictionary and find definitions of "valid" and "sound" then make list of what happened, what was said. What were perceptions, what was actually said, how can you prove what he said, etc.

For example for "sound'' you might find the definition "impression conveyed" this is different than what you find under "valid" which might be "having legal efficacy." Each word has several definitions......read them. Think about them and then the answer will become more apparent.

Most new vacuums will do the same. Buy what you want, not what someone tells you that you want. $$$$
