I have a 2000 Ford Focus and the heat shield is hanging down and ratteling when the car idles. I have an appointment with the dealership to have it repaired. It's 69.99 to look at the car which goes towards repairs once they figure out what needs done. How much should I expect to pay to have the shield either repaired or completely replaced?

Heat shields are there for a reason--- to keep the carpet from burning or melting usually. Any good repair shop or muffler shop can probably fix it or replace it cheaper than a dealer. It's basically a formed piece of sheetmetal with some attaching brackets maybe----might cost 20-40.00 plus labor to replace. Call the dealer parts dept and try to get a price on just the heat shield alone. There may be a few different ones on the whole exhaust, so try to determine where on the car it's at.

That would have been a good problem to take to an independent repair shop because they probably could fix the old shield, whereas the dealer may "go by the book" and install a whole new part.

a lot of used car dealers keep a second set of keys and give them to you when its paid off. the problem you have, is you bought it as is, meaning you have a screwed up key. now why would they buy you a key? honestly? it speaks volumes of who you chose to do business with. a good dealer usually charges a little more, but its worth it, because they care that your happy. the last time i bought a vehicle on time(20 yrs ago) they not only hunted down the vehicle for me, but bent over backwards to get it right, and worked with me when i had some hard times. the same vehicle would have been around $800 less somewhere else, but i paid for the good service. sadly the man passed away, but i would definitely do business with him again if i could. the tires were shortlived and the gas was almost empty, but when i held $40 back from my down that he wanted for gas and a repair manual, he wholeheartedly agreed to it.

You talking bout the shield under the hood? Honestly, i would call the junkyards and find one first. Buy it for cheap. then call around and see what someone would charge you to put it on . I would never go to a dealership and have them work on it unless its a last resort, I like supporting local business. Plus it may be cheaper to go to a don juan shop. also look foor headliner shops, they might fab one for ya. also it might only need a pop rivet!

Do NOT go to the dealer!! The heat sheild probably isn't even necessary. Any garage can remove the rusted part and determine if you even NEED to replace it. Probably won't cost you anything, and you'll still be perfectly safe and legal.

Don't go to a dealer for that. Go to a good muffler shop and pay about half of that. That part is so simple to fix.
