just curious.

i remember seeing a few years back on HSN, a systemax pc with a 1.4ghz cpu, and i thought that was fast. its amazing to see how much technology has progressed.

Hi, the fastest single core processor today is the Intel Pentium 4 975X Extreme. This processor runs at 3.73Ghz, it has a 1066mhz FSB and 2MB cache. Which for a single core processor is still very impressive and some debait it is better than some Pentium D processors. And yes I couldent agree more it is simply amazing how fast technology progresses, Intel Core 2 Duo came out at the start of 2006, 6months later there was quad core processors, its really amazing. But there you have it anyway the Pentium 4 975X is the fastest single core on the market, and it runs at 3.73Ghz.

Hope this helps, Kieran

The concept of dual-core is more about efficiency than speed. Think of it this way - while you are playing a game, which may require a lot from your processor, there are other processes running in the background, many of which are necessary to keep your PC running. With a single-core processor, the one component has to do all of this. With a dual-core, you essentially have 2 processors to direct the same activities, so while the game may not be designed to take advantage of this technology, the processors can distribute their workload and more processing power can be devoted to your task at hand (your game). This is one of the reasons that the speeds are similar or even slightly lower than what a single-core is listed at. Even though the speed is lower, you have 2 of them working.

Hi It depends on which motherboard you use. Mine runs at a bit over 2 GHz but, since it uses an AMD chip, it is equivalent to a 3.2 GHz chip.

you have to do some research there are high ones like 2.8 with hyper-threading where it splits the instruction in two and process it faster. You can also over clock the processors. you can turn a 2.8 GHZ into 3.0 GHZ.

also it depends if its Intel or AMD.

2.3Ghz is the fastest single core processor I have seen. There might be faster ones though.
