It is usually the law in the states if the family wants any sort of viewing of the body for family or for services. It is a health regulation.
If there is no viewing and the body if cremated or buried within a short time, no need to do so.

It is to preserve the body through viewing at the wake. If that is your option than no....it is mandatory. It's is also health-related. Have you ever smelled a corpse 3-4 hours after dying.
Cremation does not require the body to be embalmed if it is done right away.
Also Abbey's and Monasteries do not cremate. They bury right away.
And finally, it's what the law is in the place where you currently are....eg: India, Middle East, etc....

Embalmed. It keeps them from decaying (slows it anyways).
