First and most important, make certain there are no holes, open seams, loose seams before beginning.
A feather comforter can be washed in a washing machine with detergent (NO BLEACH) on a warm water GENTLE cycle. It will clump up and look like a mess when the washing is done. Do not worry.
Put in the dryer on AIR ONLY no heat with two clean tennis balls or one very clean sneaker. It makes a hello of noise but it will work. It takes a fair amount of time for the feathers to fluff up again. You could add a shot of Febreeze just before drying. If he has never washed it, it will certainly improve everything.

They say not to wash it but I have. The key is to dry it on a low setting for a long time and air dry it outside for a bit to fresh it up.
