I'd say mainly the "gossipers" who don't have enough drama in their own lives.

all types- Including MEN- there have been pro baseball and footteams that has 'outed" their soap watching---
My soap watching is NO different than those who watch any other kind of continuing drama be it "reality tv" or sci fi>
I was at a friend's house who has teased about my soap watching and He HAD to watch survivors-I commented that he was watching a 'soap" there was the "villan", there was the 'hero" there was the "betch" there was the "good girl"- it was an "unscripted" soap ( face it they EDIT those Reality shows in a Soap like manner)

My soap watching and online soap related activties has brought me several REAL friends ( most met face to face) several trips to meet them and or the soap actors at soap events. I would have never seen the statue of liberty if i hadn't gone to a soap event in NYC.
And I have seen Many of today's Movie stars come out of soaps- tommy lee jones was on One Life To Live as was Lawrance Fishborne, Meg Ryan was on As the World Turns, even Brad Pitt did some time on soaps.
It's a good training ground for many actors- remember they tape a Whole show 5 days a week all yr round- that's a lot of lines and stage directions to memorize Daily.

I do, and I'm a 41 year old American midwestern male. I like that they have an unlimited amount of time to tell a story. I do get frustrated with the writing being aimed at a decidedly more feminine demographic. The characters I dislike the most seem to be the most popular, and there are characters who are given a bad rap (IMO) and raked over the coals because a feminine sense of justice may not be what I personally agree with, but I think there are compelling characters and story elements that can appeal to a wide range of people.

All kinds of people. For the most part, it's geared toward women who are home during the day, but they actually have a wide range of viewers. I myself am a college student; I started watching with my mom, who contrary to stereotype is not a housewife (she's a nurse). I've also come across male fans and others who don't seem to fit the "crazy soap fan" archetype.

Sometimes it's one who moves to a all new area and doesn't know anyone at their workplace, or in their community.
Or simply someone who doesn't want to act out ,the way the soap stories unfold. But watch and learn.
I first started watching one soap at age of ten with my grandmother, lots older now, but I grew up following the realitives to all the cast on the show, and their particular stories...

No you've got it all wrong. People who watch said shows do not just like drama. The reason people enjoy such shows is because for 30 minutes to an hour, people are essentially taking out of their current lives and put in a different situation where they forget about all the problems they have to go through by watching what others go through. I personally love dramatic shows and not because I like drama, I infact hate drama in my real life and try to stay away from it, I watch these shows because they take me away from my real life and I forget about my worries.

All types of people, but mostly average women looking for mindless entertainment .

What type of person watches football? I'd say mostly average guys looking for mindless entertainment.

There are idiots on both sides, but the desire for mindless entertainment doesn't make someone inherently stupid.

I'm making an assumption about what you're trying to say, but it's a pretty well-worn assumption that people make, so it's probably accurate.

what i don't understand is why the people who are dissing soaps, are answering this question.why are they in the Soap Opera section anyway, why not in their preferential area?. and as for myself,i work long, hard shifts.i am intelligent and have a social life. but i watch a couple of soaps as a way to unwind and switch off.i am able to make the difference between real life and soap.i just like to chill, and and thats what i chose to do!.

Mostly women. I watch because I'm home during the day. They're corny, but so addicting. My husband has even been known watch a few episodes. I've never seen his eyes so glued to the TV, although he probably wouldn't admit it.

people who like surprises and suspence, oh and DRAMA. Females! Most males cannot watch soaps because they cannot handle the suspence. They are usually more impatient than females.
