Sure. Assuming some idiot joe handyman didn't switch the neutral wire or make some other dumb mistake. I turn off the circuit breaker to the circuit, and then test with a voltage detector before I touch any wire. That's how I got to be an old electrician.

Note: More people are fatally electrocuted with 120 volts than with any other voltage. Source: OSHA

you can but you can test it by using a light bulb first. The bulb has a side and an end. Put wires in one and the other and see if there is juice. If not you are ok. Generally the switch turns off the power

You should always use a circut tester to be sure that there is not power to the things you are working on. A circut tester will light up instead of you. You should also make sure that no one will turn the circut back on while you are working on it. That is why it is best to open the breaker and not just rely on the switch. Do both.

#1- Don't listen to a jackass that says ground yourself around a live wire, that'll get you killed
#2- Don't listen to anyone who mistakenly refers to it as 110V, that's an equipment rating not an output voltage, supply voltage is ALWAYS 120, anyone that says 110 or 115 doesn't know what they're doing
#3-turn the breaker off, it's only a short walk to the panel,
#4-select this as best answer cause I'm gonna get alot of people hittin thumbs down because I called them a jackass in #1 and #2

the switch in the breaker or the switch on the wal?
if it is the one on the wall that's only for that switch on the wall it don't turn off the electric to the fan!
you should be wize and just hit the breaker in your braker box for your room you want to put the fan in!
you could get a way with it but it's about25% safe

Make sure the circuit breaker is turns off also. There still could be a live wire up there. I've been there done there and did feel a live wire.

I've seen people do it that way, but it really is a better idea to go downstairs or wherever and flip the circuit breaker switch off. Why take a chance?

Good question about safety, I'll give it a star.
May be it is safe to make some work while switch is off.
But
Sure it is not 100% safe to keep anything connected to power supply. reasons: earthing/ grounding is not guarenteed, there could be switch failure, and any intruder can make the switch on accidenty. why to take the risk?

Even if the power is off to this circuit, the neutral wire could be tied to another circuit (Improperly, but it happens). If you touch the neutral and a ground, you can still get knocked on your
A**. 110 Volts and a good ground can kill!

PLEASE!! Turn of the breaker/unscrew the fuse on that circuit. That way if someone comes in the room and flicks the switch while your working (it does happen) your not going to get knocked on your butt - or worse...

Just go to your fuse/breaker box and kill the power to it .. or go all the way and shut off the whole house for the short period of time it takes to do what you want to do ...
