Hello,
Yesterday I have read "1984" book by George Orwell. I am still under influence of thet book. Fantastic... Brilliant. Actually they did a similar movie of 1984, it is called BRAZIL. But it is just like a bad caricature of the book. Anyway, that book was written in 1920's and story took place in 1984. Its portrait of future is so very dark, I am still under influence of it.
Do you think, seriously, we would be like in that book?
...for those there who truly understands the meaning of that question :)

Yes, I read the book, and several others by Eric Blair (oops - George Orwell) too. It is no longer a question of are we going to be like the book '1984'? - we already are and have been for some time.
Orwell's book was written later than the 1920s, and was also made into two different movies. I prefer the older black & white one myself. I saw 'Brazil' and Alan Moore's comic/movie 'V For Vendetta' which is also very similar to '1984.'
If you ever watch the movie 'Enemy of the State' you will see how what I mean by we already are like 1984, and have been for some time.

Yes, we are headed that way very quickly. The next few years will see the introduction of National ID cards and it's already getting hard to leave or enter the country.
Commerical media is getting less free. Have you noticed that all the old respected anchors have now left the major networks? How most of the major newspapers are owned by just a few corporations? How network news has more about Paris Hilton and other celebrities than it has real news?
Education is also being controlled. Government is delegating more and more what can be taught. My sister works in the school system and she says it's hard to teach ANY history unless she ties it into an approved literature book.
A restrictive government needs control of transportation, communication, and education in order to control the people. Examples: Taliban, Iran, North Korea, the old Soviet Union, etc.

Actually "1984" (published in1948, 84 backwards) and "Animal Farm" are more warnings of the then Stalinist system then Western Democracies. Many intellectuals at the time had a passionate belief that the Soviet model was the wave of the future and inevitable.
The following two books are an excellent introduction to Orwell's life and thinking.

The more you let the Government run your life;the more dependent you are, the closer we are to 1984. The Government IS Big Brother.

The surveillance is certainly there.
The tripartite division of society is not - Orwell got that from the British class system, not Marxism.

We're definitely headed there. "Equilibrium" is a movie that is very close to 1984.

we ARE!!! we have a president/dictator that speaks in double-speak and re-writes the past and present for his own means..we are under constant survalance and we're getting to the point where we can't trust anything the government tells us...it might not be as dark as the novel, but it's here

we're getting there but if we do, we deserve it. we don't stop for red lights so the govt puts cameras to catch us in the act. speeding too. 9/11? maybe if we kept better vigilance, it might've been avoided. do you really know who is next to you when on a plane, store or train? i'd like to live to a ripe old age and not have a crazy cut me short. if it takes govt surveillance? oh well, so be it!
