My mother, who for years has enjoyed a daily banana each morning ,is now worried that her new potassium sparing diuretic has a recommendation not to eat bananas, raisins, prunes. Would a single banana be harmful on a daily basis? She finds its 'helpful' for her daily bowel routine.

One banana a day isn't going to harm her.

I asked my doctor the same question a short time ago and he said no a banana a day is fine. Even though I am now on potassium sparing diuretic I still am losing some potassium and find it hard to keep it normal. Your mum would have to eat vast quantities of bananas to have any effect on her potassium.

no it isn't harmful at all. a potassium sparing diuretic doesn't spare all the potassium, some is still lost, one banana a day isn't going to hurt her at all. I wouldn't suggest eating an entire hand of bananas, but one, no, no problem.

Start with realizing that most hurt comes from our own expectations. If we make a mistake in our judgment of another person and that person does something that falls outside our belief in them, we are reacting to the shortcoming. On the other hand if we had better judgment or had no expectations, we would probably not have been in the position of vulnerability and/or the effect would be minimal. Most people fail to keep their own identity separate from the social interactions of life. We often have a self image that is a reflection of what others think of us, and thus we lose confidence in ourselves when others do not treat us honorably. In fact what others think of us is peer esteem, not self esteem. What others do, say, think or feel toward us is much more a statement of who they are than who we are, and as such should not be allowed to inflict pain on ourselves. Self esteem in earned from yourself- it has nothing to do with anyone else unless you allow it, and that is something you should never do. You can forgive people for their shortcomings- but at the same time, you should learn and adjust your judgment and expectations of them. If you fail to do that, you will set yourself up for a second helping of the same treatment. "I can forgive and I can forget, but I'll be damned if I will forget what I forgave". You can forgive an offender, because when you do you put the incident behind you and your own life can go forward constructively. You remember so that you will not overextend your trust to such a person again. Everything we do is a statement of how we think and what we are capable of. If a person violates your trust once, you should know it is highly likely to happen again when the conditions are right. Regardless of what we say- what we do is who we are. Learn to use that as a way to read people's character, and your life will improve dramatically.

Bananas are high in potassium. If she speaks to a dietitian she should be able to advise her. Usually they are attached to your GP surgery. Ask the practice nurse or GP to arrange this.
