Started September 1, 1939 with the German invasion of Poland.

Started because of nationalism and their expansion into other countries by Germany, Italy and Japan.

The Second World War started gradually. Its actual roots can be traced back as far as 1919 with the treaty of Versailles, then as countries where formed and new borders where created (the states of Chezcosolvakia, Yugoslavia, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and the seperate states of Hungary and Austria where formed) there was the ususal bickering and fighting. The Soviet Union was forced into a defensive war as the Whites and Reds along with expedition forces from a number of nations combatted each other, the Poles then went to war in the 20's against the Soviets whilst they recovered for more territory, the Italians and Germans where in turmoil and civil wars just about broke out in the countries in differing unsuccesful coups, the Japanese invaded Manchuria and made it a puppet state which led to the establishment of a more centralised dictatorship in that country. The English, French and Americans withdrew from many areas of reponsibility as the big 3, the Americans refused to ratify the Versailles Treaty and the League of Nations, became insular and refused to help resolve any outside issues. Then in the 30's most of the world went into recession in one form or another, mass unemployment, destruction of economies helped the popular new Nationalist movements gain more support and power due to the reforms they promised which strengthened the Fascist movements of Italy, Germany, Japan especially (The growth of the British, French and American National Groups and Ultra Right Wing parties was becoming a problem as well) countered and then overtook the threat of the Communist groups.
Once those parties took power, they had to transform the countires and make good there promises in power. The Japanese started with the 'Marco Polo' Incident in China, 1933 - 1941 the Japanese undertook a long campaign of undeclared, then full war in the China theatre. 1936 - 1939 Spain, Franco begins the Spanish Civil War. 1936 - 1937 Italy invades Ethiopia the last free state in Africa. 1936 Germany retakes the Rhineland by Military force (uncontested), 1938 Anschloss of Austria and the seizure of Sudetanland almost leads to war with France and Britain. 1939 Italy invades Albania. 1939 Germany takes the Memel district of Lithuania. 1939 Germany Invades Poland, which begins the European Conflict of the second world war when Britain and its Dominions, France declare war on Germany. 1939 USSR invade Poland, Lithuania, Eastonia and Latvia. 1939 - 1940 USSR invades Finland, Berssarabia (sorry for spelling, its in Northern Roumania). 1940 Germany invades Denmark, Norway, The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, destroys France which splits the French Empire into pro Vichy (the defeated goverment of France) and Gaulist free French (the colonies that declare they will fight on with British support). Japan takes French Indo China for bases with agreement from Vichy france. 1941 Germany and Italy invade Yugoslavia, Greece, Egypt, USSR (complicated area as Roumania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Finland, Vichy France all declare war on the USSR but not Britain and contributions of troops are sent from most of the occupied countries as well as Spain), Axis led rising in Iraq, British invade Syria and many of the Vichy Territories (bar North Africa) also Ethiopia is retaken from the Italians. Finally the Japanese, cut off from all raw materials it needs declares war and attacks The Netherlands, Portugeuse, American, British and French territory in the Pacific. The global war now really starts.

Hope it helps

Well, it depends on whether her history teachers thinks WWII started with the invasion of Poland by Germany in 1939, or the invasion of China by Japan in 1936.

It was brewing throughout 1938 as Hitler eyed up Czechoslavakia but only broke into open warfare in September 1939. Britain & France, having given up trying to appease Hitler, told him that if he invaded Poland then they would declare war on Germany.

The Germans were winning until they attacked the Soviet Union in July 1941 & then declared war on the USA in December 1941 (after their Japanese allies had attacked the USA at Pearl Harbour). After that, they began a long slide towards inevitable defeat.
