Colorado & San Diego are forced to play 1 game to see who gets the NL Wild Card. I was just curious to see if any team ever won the World Series after being in this situation. Seems hard. I mean you'd have to pitch your ace in this game, so you wouldn't be able to use him again until like Game 3 or 4 in the playoffs. Thanks.

The 1908 Cubs played a 1-game showdown with the New York Giants, and then won the World Series. Technically, it was not a playoff, it was just a make-up game that had to be played after they were tied at the end of the season.
It took a lot out of the Cubs, and they have not won a World Series since then.

The Yankees beat the Red Sox in a 1978 1game playoff, and also went on to win the World Series.

Let's see...

1948 Cleveland Indians
1978 New York Yankees

Looking back to the pre-division days, when the NL mandated a best 2-of-3 format...

1946 St. Louis Cardinals (defeated Brooklyn Dodgers 2-0)
1959 Los Angeles Dodgers (defeated Milwaukee Braves 2-0)

1978 Yankees. The Boston Tie Party, a.k.a. the Bucky Dent Game. Also the 1948 Cleveland Indians, also against the Red Sox at Fenway.
