That is not true at all!

True is, that unmarried couples are not allowed to rent and live together in an apartment. But - if a non Muslim has a residence permit and rented an apartment here, he can have his girlfriend coming over for a visit. No problem at least not regarding staying in the same flat. Also when it is illegal, nobody cares unless somebody complains.

It's different if you are Muslim. Then you can get charged for having an illicit affair (also somebody has to complain) and be punished.

But - all this does not affect tourists, as you also in a hotel get served alcohol and sometimes even pork pruducts. The police here is not insane - just the opposite always trying to comfort the tourists.

Come to Abu Dhabi, enjoy your vacation and find out how bad prejustice is by visiting an Islamic country like the UAE.

Take care!

I have not heard of anybody getting arrested for sleeping in the same hotel together. I think this is just a rumor. I read the newspapers everyday for the past 5 years and have never heard this. Tourists are unlikly to get any hassles for anything unless they misbehave like getting drunk and acting out or brining drugs into the country. Yes, it is illegal to live together, but again this is rarely enforced. The police are not insane...they are very helpful like most police all over the world. However, that said people have been arrested for French kissing in public so be warned. And most bad behavior the expats or tourists get arrested for is done in the public and is offiensive to, or dangerous to others. That is not insanity. You know when you come to any country---Islamic or not then you should respect their culture. I always read about every country I visit before I travel---even European countries because don't want to represent my country in a bad light.

Rules are very strict in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. But if in Dubai or Ajman, it is quite ok.

You have to respect the culture of the country that you visit. That is their way. You ask how they can attract tourism? If you want to go badly enough, then you will abide by their laws.
