The primary reason I asked this question is because I noticed a trend. The trend was that over the years more and more people were driving with lights in day light hours. The first time I took notice was back in 1990 just outside of Montreal. All the cars drove that way. Now it seems to me that less people are driving that way in the U.S. I know its not a law yet and I hope that government does not resort to making it one.
"1984" anyone ?

Some cars built in the late 1990's had lights that automatically come on when your turn on your engine. I had a Geo that did that. People would deliberately get behind my car and high-beam me. It was not my fault and was out of my control.

I believe most car makers have discontinued this because it caused animosity and perceived the driver with the lights on as being irresponsible or downright - dumb.

Primarily for safety. Lights alert most drivers.
It's a reason motorcycles drive with lights on.

Some years ago I read an article about a test.
Cars with lights on had less accidents.Thereafter when auto-driving highways the lights were on and I never had a problem.

a lot of cars (like my own) automatically turn on the lights when the car is turned on.

also sometimes its dark out, or raining, etc when the person starts their commute and then while they're driving it gets light out and they dont think to turn the lights off

It's to make the vehicle easier to see when it is coming toward you. It's the same effect as the daytime running lights found on most newer cars and trucks.

It is annoying but it is supposed to be a safety feature on the newer cars and trucks. Mine does that too. You can turn them off but you have to do it each time you start the vehicle.

I drive with my headlights on during the day - why? Because its safer - people notice - especially at a last minute thing - like turning corners, ect. Most drivers today are too busy on thier cell phones ( so much for it being illegal) or other things , instead of concentrating on the road, like they should.

Because you should! Cars should always have thier lights on (why do you think most cars do it automatically!!) you are more likely to see the car with headlights then no headlights! Its a safety precaution!!

It bothers me when people dont have thier headlights on!! People think that other drivers can see their light/dark car when its foggy, rainy, snowy, even when the sun is just going down! and its dangerous!! Just because you can see outside doesnt mean that other people can see your car!
