I had this problem not long ago and asked the same thing--here's what worked for me--wash your towels in HOT water and add 1 cup clear ammonia to the water. No more stinky towels!!!

They probably got so badly mildewed that they are done for...mold is really bad for you.
Try hot water and bleach with detergent and dryer sheets in the dryer.
But, I wouldn't keep them if it doesn't go away...cause then you are just drying your body off with that yuckness! Just buy some new towels...at Walmart hey are not very expensive!
We always had well water when I was a teenager and it never caused a problem...although, my friends had water softeners and that smelled like rotten eggs! It was sick...and whenever you washed your hands they felt slimy....EWWW!

wash them again using baking soda instead of detergent then add vinegar to the rinse cycle. Cleans and sanitizes them! you may want to wash them again using a good smelling fabric softener. The reason they smell is you may be using to much laundry soap and to many in each load they are not getting rinsed properly. Smaller loads and wash in the large cycle (more water for a better rinse!)

Soak ur towels in hot water. Add good quality detergent. Wash them when they are not completely cold. Rinse well. Then again soak them in water with lemon juicefor a while rinse and dry.
For hand towels u can put them in pressure cooker add just half spoon detergent and allow two whistles. Rinse and dry.

try dry or liquid color safe bleach. use a little extra soap and only hot water!!!! Plus make sure they don't sit in the washer at all!!!! Also it helps to switch out the towels more often, you should only use them about 2-3 times.

add white vinegar to your washer, I'm told it really works to kill that odor. I found that it is caused by mold growing inside your washer, where the water reaches but you can't see it. I'm not sure what to use to fix it. I've tried extra bleech in the white cycle etc but had no luck. Anybody else have any suggestions to kill the mold?

If you are using them more then once hang them to dry in a place that will get some airflow

Use bleach when washing them to make it sure it kills out all the mold - make sure they are dried thoroughly - if this doesn't work, you need to replace them.
