she flew off into history and out of people's lives back in 1936. i'm not too sure of the year but definitely around that time. she was going around the world, her and her navigator, where when coming to howland islands, she was to land, re-fuel and take off but something happened. this was in an age of questionable radio contact, airship to shore, no radar, so you really were flying by the seat of your pants. anyway, she was there then she wasn't. to this day, many theories have been offered. some feel she went down in the Pacific. it is a BIG ocean, or she landed on another island, crashed and died. still another theory has persisted that amelia was really a spy for FDR. this was prior to ww2 and japan was on the move. we in the usa knew next to nothing about japan's build-up. amelia was a gift from the gods. here she was flying into the japanese area, aerial at that. however, she crashed probably on a japanese-held island, either imprisoned then died or was killed. i kinda' believe that, too but know what? this is over 70 years ago and this is one mystery that won't be solved anytime soon!

she was trying to fly across the Pacific, and got lost, missing the island she was heading for...the Coast Guard ship stationed there heard her on the radio, but she could not hear them. She ran a search pattern about 20 miles away, but never found the island, and was lost. Possibly she made it to another nearby island and died there.
