I have gotten off as much as I can by scraping. I have steam cleaner but don't want to use it until the solid part is off the carpet. It is all dried on. Any suggestions.

As to not damage carpet, you will have to wet it. Use 1 cup white vinegar to a pail of water. That will help with the smell.

Sot clean it with Carpet spotter, the use a good Carpet Cleaner to clean up the mes, and tell him you want it disinfected.

I'd rip up the carpet and put down laminate. You can get it cheaper than any other type of flooring, it looks nice, it's durable (good for renters!) and you can do it yourself.

New carpet. Even if you can't see it, you'll be able to smell it.
