I believe you're referring to a virus and a "trojan". Within computers, a virus performs the same function a virus in your body would, make the host body sick and then copying itself using healthy material to make the host even sicker. AIDS functions this way in humans -- it's essentially a piece of DNA that takes over your body's cell-replication function to produce more of itself. I hope this analogy helps.
A trojan or a trojan virus LOOKS harmless but actually contains malicious code which will damage your computer irretrivably. Named for the Trojan horse of Greek mythology which Greek soldiers hid in until they were inside their rival city Troy and emerged to destroy it, a trojan doesn't necessarily have to be there to destroy your computer -- it could be a dormant program that spies on you or performs some other specific function. And the trojan's not trying to spread, unlike the virus which can potentially infect whole networks. A trojan is specific, and a virus is general.

A virus is a program designed to corrupt other programs and alter the way those programs work. The impact of a virus can range from making your computer crash when a certain key or series of keys is pushed, to deleting important files, and to the extreme: possibly rendering your computer inoperable.
Trojan Horse: a program that claims to be one thing but is, in fact, another. A trojan horse is not a virus per se but it may carry them. For example many people consider Kazaa, the music sharing software: a trojan horse because it carries with it a bunch of spyware. There are trojans that claim to be patches for a problem, often arriving in email, that are in fact spyware and virus installers.

Most Trojans are considered virus's by anti virus software. That is not always true as many times they are installed by respectable web sites to keep a log for marketing purposes. A real virus is malicious by nature , can do a great deal of harm and is made specifically for that purpose

A virus simply infects your computer that minute it touches it, while a trojan is like the trojan horse... it gets in by disguising itself ie a document a picture... etc. a virus enters like a thief ( you wont know it) a trojan will enter your computer with your permission.

They're basically the same thing, only trojans are harder to remove. They sneak in through the "backdoor" of your computer and mess up things. Always have anti virus and anti spyware protection plus a firewall on.
